Help us reach our $40,000 goal.

As we prepare for this special time with loved ones, sadly not everyone will have a reason to celebrate. Every day in Tasmania, more than 10 Tasmanians receive a cancer diagnosis, turning their lives upside down. Carol knows how that feels and has been incredibly brave to share her story.

In 2021, after a routine mammogram and just days before leaving for our new home in Tasmania, Gordon and I received the news that no one wants to hear. Breast cancer. It was like a slap in the face. You don't ever think it's going to happen to you. 16 days later I'm in hospital, undergoing surgery to remove an aggressive grade 3 tumour - without my network, without my usual GP.

Cancer Council Tasmania became my lifeline.

Walking into the Cancer Support Centre in Launceston for the first time felt like my favourite Aunt's house - a comfortable and safe space. I was nervous - I had never needed support before, but I instantly felt welcome and could relax. I just loved the amazing supportive care team. I was able to access information and programs like Oncology Massage, Tai Chi, Pilates, Mindfulness and Exercise Physiology. After losing my hair, I had a wig fitting and during my treatment I joined various support groups. These programs saved me.

With the impact cancer has on your finances, I will be forever grateful that everything was provided free of charge. This Christmas I know they need your help to continue doing this for others. Please don't wait until you're directly impacted by a cancer diagnosis to support this amazing organisation. Please support them as they supported me.

Best wishes for the festive season,

Carol's words are an important reminder that as we start to prepare for the holiday season and special time with loved ones, there will be many who can't.

The team at Cancer Council Tasmania is here to support people like Carol and help them navigate the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.

But we can only do this with your help.
